These Are My Mountains

For these are my mountains and this is my glen, the hills of my childhood will know me again. No land’s ever claimed me though far I did roam, for these are my mountains and I’m going home.
— Jimmy Copeland

Vuoret joita olen elĂ€mĂ€ni aikana katsellut eniten, löytyvĂ€t Gastineaun kanavan varrelta, valvoen Juneaun kaupunkia ylĂ€ilmoista ja suojaten sen asukkaita jÀÀtiköiltĂ€ puhaltavien tuulten armottomalta tuiskeelta. NĂ€mĂ€ vuoret ovat Mount Juneau ja Mount Roberts.

The mountains I've looked at most during my lifetime can be found nestled by the Gastineau Channel, peering over the city of Juneau and overshadowed by the glacial winds blowing off the Juneau Ice Field. They are Mount Juneau and Mount Roberts.

Syksyisin ja kevĂ€isin vuorilla nĂ€kyvĂ€ lumiraja kertoo kaupungin asukkaille talven tai kesĂ€n saapumisesta. NĂ€illĂ€ vuorilla on myös nĂ€hty kaikenmoista sĂ€pinÀÀ. Huhu kertoo, ettĂ€ Mount Robertsin sisĂ€ssĂ€ kulkee kullankaivuuajoilta tunneleita jopa 300 mailin edestĂ€. Se on arviolta noin viisinkertainen mÀÀrĂ€ Juneaun alueen maanteihin verrattuna.

In the fall and in the spring the snow line seen on the mountains let the people about the arrival of winter and summer. These mountains have also seen all kinds of action. Rumor has it, that there are about 300 miles worth of tunnels inside Mount Roberts from the old gold rush era. It's about five times the amount of road length in Juneau.

There's also a legend about the ultramarathon runner, who worked at a local company. He told his co-worker in the morning, that he'd thought about running up to the top of Mount Juneau and back later in the day. Usually the hike up to the top from downtown takes a fit person about four hours. The co-worker saw the marathon runner again after lunch and asked him what time he was planning on heading out since it would be getting dark at some point. The runner blurted out that he'd already been. He'd just sprinted to the top of the mountain and around the valley along the ridge in about an hour and a half.

They also used to plan to build a tram or a gondola to the top of Mount Juneau. A guy named Chuck Keen was working on it for a while until they deemed the project impossible and the Native Corporation built a tram to Mount Roberts instead. I got to go up to the top of Mount Roberts with my Venezuelan exchange student friend in the fall of '96, before they'd officially even opened it. Evidence can be seen here.

Mount Robertsille voi patikoida paljon helpommin kuin Mount Juneaulle ja alas voi aina palata Tramwayta avuksi kĂ€yttĂ€en. Alaskan isĂ€llĂ€ni on vuosikortti, jolla hĂ€n saa ottaa mukaansa yhden vieraan. TĂ€llĂ€ kertaa pÀÀsimme patikan jĂ€lkeen mukavasti alas köysiradan kyydissĂ€. Juneaun keskustan nĂ€kee hyvin tÀÀltĂ€ ylĂ€ilmoista.

Mount Roberts is much easier to hike to than Mount Juneau and you can always come down by using the Tramway. My Alaskan dad has an annual pass for the tram and gets to bring one guest. This time we go to comfortably ride down with the tram after our hike. You get an excellent view of Downtown Juneau from up here.

Tuo rumahko rakennus viimeisessĂ€ kuvassa oikealla ison paatin vieressĂ€ on muuten yhdistetty parkkihalli ja kirjasto. Niin ettĂ€ kirjasto sijaitsee parkkihallin pÀÀllĂ€ ylimmĂ€ssĂ€ kerroksessa. Tuosta yllĂ€kin nĂ€kyvĂ€stĂ€ kulmaikkunasta viimeistelin nĂ€ihin aikoihin 7 vuotta sitten graduani. Kirjasto on sattumoisin myös Alaskan Ă€itini aikaansaannos, sillĂ€ sen lisĂ€ksi, ettĂ€ hĂ€n oli vuosikausia töissĂ€ kirjastossa, toimi hĂ€n myös apulaiskaupunginjohtajana ja sai aikaan uskomattoman hienoja juttuja tĂ€ssĂ€ minulle elĂ€mÀÀkin suuremmassa Alaskan pienessĂ€ pÀÀkaupungissa.

That ugly looking building in the last picture to the right of the big ship is a combined parking garage and a library. So that the library is located on top of the parking garage on the top floor. Around this time 7 years ago, I was finishing up my thesis in the room with that corner window. The library is incidentally realized by my Alaskan mom, because despite having worked in a library for years and years,  she also worked as the Deputy City Manager and made some incredibly awesome things happen in this larger than life small town that is the capital of Alaska.
